Where Rivers Meet and Locals Gather – The Charm of the Kamo River Delta

A quiet triangle of nature, history, and daily Kyoto life.

At the northern end of Kyoto’s Kamogawa, near Demachiyanagi Station, lies a unique spot called the Kamo River Delta (鴨川デルタ). This triangular landform is created where the Kamo River (Kamogawa) and the Takano River (Takanogawa) merge. Though it may seem like just a peaceful park to visitors, the Delta holds both historic significance and a special place in Kyoto's modern culture. The site has been a beloved gathering place for centuries. In the Heian period, nobles would visit this area for poetry gatherings and leisurely outings. Today, the large grassy triangle is a popular picnic spot, playground, and chill-out zone for students, families, and even musicians. On weekends, it’s not unusual to see people practicing guitar, slacklining, or enjoying a sunset with their feet dangling in the water. One of the most iconic features of the Delta is its stepping stones, shaped like turtles and plovers (birds). These whimsical stones allow visitors to hop across the river and have become a favorite photo spot—especially among anime fans. That’s right: the Kamo Delta has appeared in several anime series, including The Tatami Galaxy and K-On!, making it something of a pop culture landmark. Whether you’re there for a moment of Zen, a splash in the shallows, or to reenact your favorite anime scene, the Kamo River Delta is a place where time flows as gently as the rivers that shape it.
