Wading into Purity – Kyoto’s Chilly Summer Ritual

The Mitarashi Festival at Shimogamo Shrine lets you cool off and cleanse your soul.

The Mitarashi Festival (御手洗祭, Mitarashi Matsuri) is an annual event held in late July at Shimogamo Shrine in Kyoto. Visitors wade barefoot into the shrine’s sacred Mitarashi Pond, where the cool spring water—believed to have purifying powers—washes over their feet and calves. This centuries-old ritual is thought to cleanse both body and soul while offering protection from illness. Participants light candles and place them in the water as prayers for health and safety. As the sun sets, the flickering flames reflected in the rippling water create a mystical atmosphere. Locals and tourists alike brave the chilly water, regardless of age, seeking a moment of connection with tradition and tranquility in the heart of Kyoto. The water is spring-fed and said to remain at around 15°C, even in the summer heat. The experience is refreshing, spiritual, and uniquely memorable—making it one of Kyoto's most beloved hidden summer rituals.
