The Mochi That Moves the Masses

Why locals line up every day for a single sweet

At the edge of the Kamogawa Delta in Demachiyanagi, there's a humble storefront that almost always has a line. The reason? One word: Mame-daifuku. This soft, chewy rice cake filled with sweet red bean paste and dotted with plump black beans is handmade daily at Demachi Futaba, a Kyoto institution since 1899. Despite no online orders or flashy signs, their mochi draws crowds—some locals even joke that the real Kyoto landmark isn't the Kamogawa Delta, but the daifuku queue next to it!
