The Legendary Onmyoji Who Could Control Spirits

Abe no Seimei, Kyoto’s mystical figure who inspired centuries of stories

Abe no Seimei was a real historical figure from the Heian period, known as an onmyoji—a master of yin-yang divination and spiritual control. But over time, his story blurred the line between fact and legend. Seimei is said to have possessed supernatural powers. Myths claim he could control shikigami (spiritual familiars), exorcise demons, and even foresee the future. In fact, some tales say his mother was a white fox spirit, making him part-human, part-supernatural. His rival, Ashiya Doman, appears in many stories as a jealous and defeated magician. These duels became popular themes in kabuki theater and even modern manga and anime. In Kyoto, you can visit Seimei Shrine, built on the site of his home. The shrine is known for its iconic pentagram symbol—believed to protect against evil—and has become a favorite power spot among tourists. Abe no Seimei’s legacy continues to enchant people today, proving that some legends never fade.
