Where can I see traditional Kyoto sweets being made?

I love Japanese sweets and will be visiting Kyoto soon. Are there any shops where I can watch wagashi being made right in front of me? Bonus points if I can try making some myself!

  1. You have several great options in Kyoto:

    Kameya Yoshinaga (https://kameya-yoshinaga.com/f/tedzukuri-en)
    – This long-established wagashi shop offers a hands-on workshop where you can make seasonal sweets like nerikiri and kinton, then enjoy them with matcha. Reservation recommended.

    Toraya Kyoto Gallery(https://www.kyoto-museums.jp/en/museum/central/3776/?utm_source=chatgpt.com)
    – A serene space near Kyoto Imperial Palace where you can watch artisans make wagashi behind a glass window and enjoy them in the tearoom.

    Honke Nishio Yatsuhashi(https://www.8284.co.jp/)
    – Famous for yatsuhashi. Some locations offer a yatsuhashi-making experience where you can roll and shape your own sweets — a fun activity for families.

If you just want to watch, many traditional shops have small display kitchens where you can see sweets being shaped by hand. Don’t forget to bow and thank the artisans — it’s a lovely way to connect with Kyoto’s confectionery culture!
