The Bean Daifuku Worth Waiting For!Demachi Futaba

6月 10, 2026

I’d eaten Futaba’s famous mame daifuku several times as a gift, but I’d never actually bought one myself.

I’d always heard about the long lines outside the shop, and somehow that kept me from visiting. One afternoon, my husband and I finally decided to see what all the fuss was about.

When we arrived shortly after lunch, the line was already huge.

People stretched far beyond the storefront, and the staff were carefully guiding customers to keep everything organized. On particularly busy days, I’ve heard the line can even extend across the nearby intersection.

We ended up waiting for about 20 minutes.

Honestly, it didn’t feel that long. Watching people leave with boxes full of sweets and trying to decide what we wanted made the time pass surprisingly quickly.

When we finally reached the display case, I realized something.

Futaba isn’t just about mame daifuku.

There were colorful seasonal sweets, rice dumplings, and traditional wagashi lined up in front of us. We had planned to buy only the famous bean daifuku, but somehow a few extra treats ended up in our bag as well.

Of course, we couldn’t leave without trying the star attraction.

The mame daifuku is simple but unforgettable. Soft mochi surrounds smooth red bean paste, while the lightly salted black beans create the perfect balance of sweet and savory flavors.

But what impressed me most wasn’t actually the daifuku.

It was the atmosphere.

Everyone in line seemed happy to be there. Locals, tourists, families, and regular customers all waited patiently for their turn. The queue itself felt like part of the experience.

In Kyoto, some attractions are temples.

Others are sweets.

If you’re visiting Kyoto and happen to find yourself standing in a long line outside Demachi Futaba, don’t worry.

You’re probably in exactly the right place.
