Can I take photos inside temples and shrines in Kyoto?

I love photography, but I don’t want to be disrespectful. Are there any rules?

    Best Practices for Photographers
    1. Look for signs (撮影禁止 = no photos; 撮影可能 = allowed).
    2. When in doubt, ask: A polite “Sumimasen, shashin o totte mo ii desu ka?” (“Excuse me, may I take a photo?”) shows respect .
    3. Stay mindful: Avoid flash, tripods, selfie sticks; don’t step on restricted paths; stay to the side, particularly on pathways considered sacred.
    4. Be discreet: Don’t disrupt worshippers or sacred ceremonies.
    5. Follow each site’s rules: Policies vary by temple and shrine—what’s allowed at one may be banned at another.
