Is Kamogawa Delta Japan’s Oldest Intersection?
Where ancient roads—and rivers—once met in Kyoto.
At the northern end of the Kamogawa River Promenade sits a peaceful triangle of land where the Kamo and Takano Rivers meet. It’s called the Kamogawa Delta, and it's a favorite spot for locals to relax, couples to date, and kids to hop across the famous stepping stones.
But what many don’t know is that this spot may have been one of the earliest transportation hubs in Japan.
Back in the Heian period, the area was a key junction connecting the capital with mountain villages and important temples like Kurama and Kibune.
In a way, it’s Kyoto’s OG intersection—still helping people connect, just with more ducks and less ox carts.
