Kyoto’s Quiet Lake Hidden Beyond the Tourist Trail
6月 6, 2026
A peaceful escape in northern Kyoto loved by locals
When most people think of Kyoto, they imagine crowded temples, historic shrines, and busy sightseeing districts.
But hidden in the northern part of the city is a place that feels completely different.
Takaragaike, which literally means “Treasure Pond,” is a peaceful lake surrounded by forests and gentle hills. Located near Kyoto International Conference Center, it is loved by local residents but often overlooked by tourists.
Unlike Kyoto’s famous attractions, there are no long lines here. Instead, visitors come to enjoy quiet walks along the water, listen to birds singing in the trees, or simply sit and watch the changing reflections on the lake.
The area around Takaragaike is especially beautiful in the early morning and at sunset. As the light changes, the surface of the water mirrors the sky and surrounding mountains, creating scenes that feel far removed from the busy streets of central Kyoto.
The lake is also part of Takaragaike Park, a large recreational area that includes walking trails, sports facilities, and family-friendly attractions. Nearby, children can enjoy Kodomo no Rakuen (Children’s Paradise), while adults often use the park for jogging, cycling, or relaxing in nature.
Many Kyoto residents have fond memories of Takaragaike. Some visited as children on school outings, while others still come regularly to escape the city’s crowds. It is one of those places that locals quietly treasure.
The name “Treasure Pond” feels fitting. While there may not be actual treasure hidden beneath the water, the lake offers something just as valuable: a chance to experience a slower, quieter side of Kyoto.
If you have already visited Kyoto’s famous temples and want to discover a different side of the city, consider taking a short trip north. As the sun sets behind the hills and the lake reflects the evening sky, it is easy to understand why Takaragaike remains one of Kyoto’s hidden gems.
