A Beautiful Rose Garden in Kyoto’s Countryside

5月 30, 2026

Keihoku Rose Garden Open Garden 2026

For eight days this spring, the Keihoku Rose Garden (Rokkahan Karentei) will open to the public.

Located in the rural Keihoku area of northern Kyoto, the garden features approximately 400 rose bushes from around 250 varieties, set against a backdrop of traditional satoyama scenery.

One of the highlights is the “Rose Waterfall” area, inspired by the splashing waters of Rokkaseki, a historic weir located on the upper reaches of the Katsura River. Visitors can also enjoy rose-covered arches, colorful flower displays, and a traditional thatched-roof farmhouse that blends naturally into the surrounding landscape.

The garden was designed around the theme of fragrance, with carefully selected rose varieties chosen to fill the valley with their scent as mountain breezes pass through.

This year marks the garden’s 10th anniversary. To celebrate, a new Japanese garden area will be opened to visitors for the first time. The peaceful space features flowing water and a quiet atmosphere designed for relaxation and reflection.

Visitors can also stop by the adjacent Rokkahan Tea House, where handmade soba noodles made from freshly stone-milled buckwheat flour are now being served.

Pets are welcome.
